All you need to know about Nissan electric vehicles!

While Nissan had been a leader with its Nissan Leaf, the very first electric car marketed, the manufacturer has been quieter in the following years. With its new Nissan Ariya and its Ambition 2030 program, things are quickly getting back on track!

Ambition 2030, Major Investments in Electrification

Ready to make a real green shift, Nissan plans to invest no less than 2,000 billion yen, or the equivalent of $22.4 billion, in vehicle electrification. The manufacturer calls this program Ambition 2030 because it is aiming high by the end of the decade.

Nissan is banking on 100% electric vehicles as well as those using e-POWER technology. The latter is a hybrid form in which the electric motorization is supported by a gasoline range extender. It is the gasoline engine that complements the electric one, and not the other way around as we often see.

The next 5 years will be particularly active: worldwide, 20 new all-electric or electrified models with e-POWER are expected. And by 2030, this figure will rise to 23 new models, more than half of which will be all-electric.

By 2030, Nissan aims to achieve 40% electrified vehicle sales in the United States. Its other targets are set for 2026; it aims for a percentage of electric sales:

• 75% in Europe
• 55% in Japan
• 40% in China

The significant investments planned will allow the development of many interesting models on the market.

Nissan Electric: Four New Concepts Revealed

With these targets, we can expect to see new electric vehicles on the market very soon. And Nissan is giving us a glimpse of what they might look like, revealing 4 concepts to the public:

• Chill-Out
• Surf-Out
• Hang-Out
• Max-Out

There will be two SUVs on display. The first is the Chill-Out, a vehicle with a rounded shape, whose front end is somewhat reminiscent of the Ariya, with which it shares the CMF-EV platform. The second is the Hang-Out, a square-shaped vehicle with swivel seats. Both will feature the e-4ORCE all-wheel drive system.

Pickup trucks are becoming increasingly popular among travellers, and Nissan is targeting its Surf-Out to them. It will be an electric truck with off-road capabilities and different engine choices.

A sports car is also waiting for you with the Max-Out concept:

Battery Evolution: Towards the End of Cobalt

Nissan's ambitious program is not limited to the development of new vehicles. The manufacturer intends to evolve battery technologies, which will become solid. The carmaker announces:

"Nissan [...] will introduce cobalt-free technology to reduce costs by 65% by fiscal year 2028.[1]"

Thus, Nissan electric car prices are expected to catch up with gasoline-powered cars. With the electric vehicle subvention still in effect, this means a significant reduction in costs.

Nissan Leaf and Nissan Ariya: The Two Current Models

What are the current Nissan models? If you are looking for an electric vehicle in Québec, you have two choices: the Nissan Leaf sedan and the Ariya SUV. However, the latter should be pre-ordered given the current context.

With the announcement of an upcoming SUV smaller than the Ariya as well as several new electric vehicles, however, the Nissan Leaf is set to disappear.
